LOCAL TURNPIKE ROADS

Chilbolton Avenue is on the western edge of the city of Winchester, running between Stockbridge Road to the north-west and Romsey Road to the south-west.

Both of these two roads were turnpike roads from the mid-18th century to the late 19th century. Stockbridge Road was part of the Stockbridge to Winchester Turnpike Trust, established in 1758 and incorporated the Weeke Turnpike Gate. The Weeke Toll Cottage was sited close to the current junction of Stockbridge Road and Chilbolton Avenue. The trust ceased to operate in 1872 and the Weeke Toll Cottage was sold. Romsey Road (then known as Cock Lane) was part of the Winchester and Romsey Turnpike Trust, established in 1759. It ceased to operate in 1876 and the Cock Lane toll cottage on Romsey Road, close to the current Hilliers Garden Centre, was sold.
