LADY ELIZABETH C SHARP BETHUNE

Lady Elizabeth Constance Carnegie Sharp Bethune (Resident 1921-1931)

Elizabeth Constance Carnegie Maitland Herriot was born in Kettle, Fife in 1864. She married Sir Alexander Sharp Bethune, 9th Baronet of Scotscraig, Fife in Kensington, London in 1889. In 1901 Census, Alexander is described as a tea-planter, and they have three daughters who were born while they were in Ceylon – Marguerite, Evelyn and Elizabeth. Their fourth child, Alexander Maitland Sharp Bethune, was born in 1909 in Surrey.


Alexander Sharp Bethune died in 1917, and the son, Alexander Maitland Sharp Bethune, became the 10th Baronet of Scotscraig.

Lady Sharp Bethune moved into Weeke Gore, which see renamed Crestweeke, in 1921. Her son was living with her at Crestweeke at his coming of age in 1930. She left Crestweeke in 1931 and died in 1935. She is buried in the family grave at St Andrews, Kingswood, Surrey, where her husband was buried.
