LIEUTENANT-COLONEL T. H. P. MORRIS M.C.

Thomas Herbert Picton and Cynthia Gertrude Morris (Resident 1913-1914)

Thomas Herbert Picton Morris was born in 1883 in Kensington, London. He attended Sandhurst Military College in 1901. Thomas married Cynthia Gertrude Keating in 1909 and had two children, Miles Picton (b. 1910) and Philip Sheehy Keating (b. 1913). Philip was born while the Morris's were living at Lang House.

Thomas joined the Rifle Brigade in 1902. He served in the South African War in 1902. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1905 and Captain 1912. He was the Adjutant of the Rifle Depot in Winchester from 1912 to 1913. He then became Adjutant of the 1/8th Regiment (Post Office Rifles). He was posted to France with them 1915. In October 1915 he took command of a Service Battalion of the Rifle Beigade, as temporary Lieutenant-Colonel. He was mentioned in despatches three times; awareded the Military Cross on14 Jan 1916; awarded Brevet Major on 3 June 1916. He was mortally wounded on 15 Sept 1916 and died on the 18th. He had been recommended for a DSO.

He died of wounds received in action in the Somme. He is buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France. There is a memorial window to him in St Cross Hospital Church, Winchester.
