COMMANDER STUART J LAYTON BENNETT

Stuart John and  Madge Marion Layton Bennett (Residents 1933-1936)

Stuart J Layton Bennett was born in 1891 in Hampstead, London.

​

He joined the Royal Navy in 1903 and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1921.

​

He married Madge Marion Arthur in London in 1930. Madge Marion was born in Shanghai, China in 1896. She married Alan O. Courtis in 1920, in Cardiff. Alan died in 1924.

Stuart and Madge had a daughter Elizabeth Anne and they moved into West Dene in 1933.

​

Stuart retired from the Navy in 1934. He later took on a civilian role with the RAF as a chartered accountant.

​

The Layton Bennetts left West Dene in 1936.

​

Stuart died in 1966 in Newbury, Berkshire. Madge died in 1981 in Wandsworth, London. They are buried at the Cat Street Cemetery, East Hendred, Oxfordshire.

Elizabeth Anne married Michael C Bowyer in 1952. The HGS MI records for Magdalen Hill Cemetery show them both at the same plot as her in-laws, Hugh Edward Wentworth Bowyer and Suzette Bowyer. (plot XX 141)

However, the current memorial at that plot only records the names of her in-laws. Is this a replacement gravestone?
