VICE-ADMIRAL EVERARD J HARDMAN-JONES C.B. O.B.E.

Everard John and Lilian Ursula Hardman-Jones (Residents 1927-1933)

Everard John Hardman-Jones was born in 1881 in Easthampstead, Berkshire.

​

Everard joined the Navy as a cadet in 1896. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1903 and Commander in 1911. During World War One he was Signals Officer to Earl Jellicoe and then executive officer on the cruiser Dublin and then the battleship Barham.

 

In 1920 he was promoted to Captain and also made an OBE.

​

He married Lilian Ursula Vivian in 1921 in London. Lilian had two children with her first husband, William Mackworth Parker, who was killed in 1915 in Belgium.

​

As Captain, he served on HMS Caledon, Champion, Cantebury, Erebus, Furious and Courageous. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1933, made a CB in 1935 and made a Vice-Admiral in 1937 on his retirement.

​

The Hardman-Jones' had moved into Ashton House in 1927 and stayed there until 1933.

​

During World War 2 he was recalled to serve as Senior Naval Officer, Newhaven Sub-command.

​

Everard was the Chairman of the Winchester Rural District Council from 1945-1956.

​

Everard died in Hursley in 1962. Lilian died in 1966 in Cornwood.
