MAJOR SIR GUY COLIN CAMPBELL

Guy Colin and Mary Arabella Swinnerton Campbell (Residents 1920)

Guy Colin Campbell was born in 1885 in Berkley Square, London. He became the 4th Baronet of the Campbells of St. Cross Meade on the death of his father in 1931.

​

He married Mary Arabella Swinnerton Kemeys-Tynte in 1909.

​

He served with the Kings Royal Rifle Corp from 1914 to 1920, leaving service as a Major.

​

It was at the end of his service with the KRRC when the Campbells lived briefly Lang House - but long enough to be included in the 1920 (Spring) Electoral Register and have an entry in the Telephone Directory.

​

In 1920 he joined The Times and later became editor of sport. He wrote numerous golf articles and books, including Golf for Beginners in 1923 and A History of Golf in Britain (1952). He designed many golf courses and was a founder member of the International Society of Golf Architects in 1929.

​

He was in America working on a golf course design in Richmond when he was taken ill, and died in Washington DC in 1960 and was buried at St Andrews, Fife.
