DR. WILLIAM J E PHILLIPS

Dr William John Elliott and Eunice Eileen Phillips, (Residents 1946-1948)

William J E Phillips was born near Rotherham in Yorkshire in 1912.

He went to Malvern College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He finished his training as a doctor at St Georges Hospital London. He then took up a practice at Sherwood in 1936.

 William married Eunice Eileen Black in 1937 and moved to a practice in Alfreton, Derbyshire in 1938. They had two sons.

He was a member of the Territorial Army for two years before the war. At the start of the war, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was promoted to Major and went to Singapore.

He became a Japanese prisoner of war in 1942, and released in 1945.

The Phillips lived in Lang House from 1946 to 1948. They then emigrated to Australia and their house was sold at auction in 1948 to Sir Mark Aitchison.

Eunice died in New South Wales in 1989 and William died there in 1997.
