FRANCIS A CARTER
Francis Alfred and Margaret Ann Carter (Residents 1910-1930)
Francis Alfred Carter was born in 1840 in Alverstoke, Hampshire. His wife, Margaret Ann King, born in 1854 in Kirtling, Cambridgeshire, clearly the reason for the name of the house.
They were married in 1887 in Victoria, Australia.
They had no children.
Francis joined the Royal Navy in 1859. He was appointed as Paymaster in 1877. His postings included the Australia Station and the East Indies Station. In 1883 he was awarded the Ottoman 4th Class Order of Osmanieh and also the Egypt Medal. He as put in charge of the Royal Navy Naval, Victualling and Medical Stores in Sydney for a 5 year posting in 1887. In 1895, Francis retired from the Royal Navy. He had been the Fleet-Paymaster and retired with the rank of Paymaster in Chief.
Francis died in 1919 in Winchester. His widow Margaret continued to live in the house until her death in 1930.

Francis and Margaret are buried in West Hill Cemetery, Winchester. The plot number is B 159 (HGS MI). Section B is to the rear of the cemetery lodge. The grave is very overgrown. From the HGS MI records, the wording is:

In Loving Memory of Francis A. Carter RN died 22nd March 1919
and Margaret Ann Widow of Francis Carter died 8th April 1930.
