ANDREW T MACDONALD

Andrew Thomas and Elizabeth Oliver MacDonald (Residents 1952-1983)

Andrew MacDonald (or McDonald) was born in St. Andrew, Edinburgh in 1906. Elizabeth Oliver Cameron was born in Morningside, Edinburgh in 1909. They married in 1932.

Andrew was often called Don, and Elizabeth was called Bet or Bessie.  They moved down from Edinburgh to Chelmsford, Essex after they married and moved to Cambridge during the war. By 1948 they were resident in Hatherley Road, Winchester. They had Pentlands built in 1952.

Andrew was a Civil Engineer and worked on the Gezira Irrigation Scheme for the Anglo/Sudan Civil Service in the late 20s. The Gezira Scheme is one of the largest irrigation projects in the world. It is centered on the Sudanese state of Al Jazirah, just southeast of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers at the city of Khartoum. He then worked for the Essex Water Board and for the Hampshire River Authority after the war until he retired in 1971.  Elizabeth was a member of the Tapestry Guild at Winchester Cathedral.

In 1983 they sold Pentlands to move back to Edinburgh as a final retirement. Andrew died six months later and  Elizabeth returned to Winchester and took a flat, and lived there until she died in 1996.
